A Long Weekend Well Spent: Exploring Kenmare from the Kenmare Bay Hotel
We all love a good bank holiday weekend, but our May escape to Kenmare truly hit the sweet spot — a blend of wild scenery, local charm, and a warm welcome that made it seriously hard to leave. Here’s a peek into our stay at the lovely Kenmare Bay Hotel and all the gorgeous moments in between. If you're looking for ideas for your own trip, this one’s for you!
Friday – Arrival & A Warm Kerry Welcome
We rolled into Kenmare on Friday afternoon and checked into the Kenmare Bay Hotel, just a short stroll from town. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we were greeted with that famous Kerry hospitality – genuine, warm, and fuss-free.
Tucked just behind the hotel is a handy little path that takes you straight down to the heart of the town. With the sun beaming down, we wandered through the colourful streets, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying a well-earned beverage (or two!). Music drifted out from every corner, tempting us to stay out, but with a full weekend ahead, we opted for a quiet night to recharge.
Saturday – Shopping, Scenic Lunch & Kayaking Under the Stars
After a solid breakfast, it was time for "himself" to take his twice-a-decade spin around Quills of Kenmare for new clobber . The team there are always up for the chat and couldn’t have been more helpful. With bags in hand, we took their recommendation and headed off for lunch at Helen’s Bar, about a 25-minute drive with jaw-dropping scenery the whole way. Sitting outside by the water with fresh seafood and a chilled glass in hand – this is what Irish weekends were made for.
That evening brought the highlight of the trip – a night kayaking adventure with Emerald Outdoors. Just 8 minutes from the hotel in Templenoe, Eamon and the crew took us out on the calm waters of Kenmare Bay. With the sun setting and stars twinkling above, it was peaceful, magical, and perfect for beginners. If you're even half-considering it – do it.
Sunday – Lighthouses, Islands & Craic in Baltimore
Sunday saw us ticking off a big one from the bucket list – a trip to the Fastnet Lighthouse with Cape Clear Ferries. It’s a bit of a drive (about 1 hour 25 mins to Baltimore), but absolutely worth it. The ferry takes you around the lighthouse with a stop at Cape Clear Island. On a sunny day, it's a dreamy way to experience the rugged charm of West Cork.
That evening, Baltimore was buzzing with trad music and seaside energy, the kind of place that makes you want to linger. But with Kenmare calling us back, we hit the road for one more scenic drive via Skibbereen and returned just in time for a quick change and one last night out.
Final Thoughts – Why Kenmare?
Kenmare has it all – incredible scenery, vibrant pubs, unique shops, and a casual dining scene that’s as delicious as it is welcoming. Whether you're in the mood for adventure, culture, or simply taking it easy, there’s something here for everyone.
And with the Kenmare Bay Hotel as your base, you get the comfort, the convenience, and that signature Kerry hospitality that makes you feel like you’re coming home – even if it’s your first visit.
We’ll be back. And if you're thinking about where to go next weekend? You might just find your answer in Kenmare.
